1/3 of my garlic bulbils are now planted!
The ones I planted today are sprouted ones from my property.
As you can see, I planted these guys in nice orderly rows. A garlic farmer on YouTube recommended doing some like this, and some scatter planted.
My plan is to plant the other half of the garlic from my land in lines, but just pour them in long rows and cover them without attention to orientation or spacing. Then I will plant the last 1/3, which is heirloom field garlic from my mother's garden, in a shallow trench. I'll broadcast them, then lightly cover with dirt.
We'll see which do best!
The bulbils form on the flowers, and naturally replant the garlic in case the bulb dies. Planting the bulbils ensures good genetic diversity in a field garlic population.
Traditional garlic is planted from bulbs and is very sexually similar, though more stable in flavor. My field garlic is a mix of spicy garlics I particularly enjoyed from farmers markets.
I also have bulbs to plant, but bending over for that long was exhausting.
