Almost all jewelry made by even the most high-end fashion designers is made of stainless steel coated with gold. Very few designers make both fine and fashion jewelry. 

So what makes something fine jewelry and not fashion jewelry? To be considered “fine jewelry” the entire piece has to be made of solid gold or platinum. For example, Cartier does not make ANY jewelry made of anything but solid gold, platinum, or diamonds. Even the silver-colored jewelry is actually made of solid white gold.
