A new poem in development. Wrote it in the backyard, chillin with Sam-dog :)

_____

FRIEND TO ALL

1.

I observe the copper shimmer of Sam’s coat,
gleaming in the sun, paws crossed,
sniffing the summer air.

All around him, finches flutter--
hummingbirds move to their feeders,
ducks quack and ruminate nearby.

In this world, he seems to have
only one enemy.

BushyButt McNutts, the backyard squirrel.

Sam ensures that BushyButt can’t get
too greedy
with the nuts he craves,
chasing him high up the tree.

BushyButt chitters back, irritated
and shows small braveries in battle.

But he does not face the mighty Sam,
friend to all
(except squirrels.)

2.

Or, maybe i see it all wrong,
because now, Sam simply sits,
patiently,
waiting for BushyButt to move.

He seems less like a vicious attacker,
and more like the tabloid journalist--

so full of curiosity,
so full of energy, that their sprint
scares away the creature
they most wish to be close to.

Sam sits at the base of the tree,
nose to the sky,
gently waiting.
